Balázs Zachar

I always gravitated towards the creative fields, that is why I choose the film and entertainment law as my specialty. After a few years in the cultural governance in Hungary and coordinating the work on Hungary’s film law in the early 2000s, I started to make plans about producing films too.

Being the head of legal affairs at the Hungarian Film Fund I had the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the field of public funding of film productions. From 2018 I launched my freelance producing career, working mostly with Proton Cinema in Hungary, where I could make several short and feature films. I got the chance to present our films in festivals like Karlovy Vary IFF, Locarno and Venice.

Being in the very middle of filmmaking I felt I need to keep updated about the evolving economic and legal landscape of the film industry hence next to my producing activity I continued working as a legal counsel for film projects, covering production contracting and rights clearance mostly in international shows for HBO, Netflix and A+E among others. I am a graduate of EAVE Producers’ Workshop, and completed the European Film Business and Law MBA program (Erich Pommer Institute, Germany), where my master thesis was about the legal and business aspects of AI in film production.
